Fraud Prevention
  1. Whenever you are suspicious of a Card or the person presenting it, call the American Express Authorisation Centre on 800 124 2230 and ask for ‘Code 10’ authorisation – this will connect you directly to an Authoriser.
  2. For your protection, if you are ever suspicious of a Card transaction or a customer, do not confront the customer directly.
  3. When the Cardmember is present, be alert to Cards that are visibly altered or damaged.

If the transaction is declined through the electronic POS terminal and displays a ’pick up’ message, don’t return the Card to the customer, contact the American Express Authorisation Centre on 800 124 2230 and ask for ‘Code 10’.

Use the following tips to help prevent fraud. If your establishment is involved in uncovering a fraud, you will be rewarded financially.

Always Ensure
  • The Card is whole, intact and valid.
  • The Card signature stripe is intact and has not been tampered with.
  • The Card relates to the holder in terms of name, age, gender and nationality.
  • The Card number and the signature on the Card matches those on the signed slip.
Never Accept
  • A Card that’s damaged, altered or with chipped corners.
  • A Card with a dull finish or blurred patchy printing.
  • An authorisation approval code from a third party.
  • To return the Card until the transaction is authorised.
  • To split a purchase into more than one transaction.
  • To give cash against the Card.
  • To process a transaction without an approval code, if the transaction amount is higher than your Service Establishment’s floor limit.
Validity
  • Every American Express Card has an expiry date.
Security Code
  • The four-digit number on the front of the Card is always printed (not embossed).
Name
  • The American Express Card is not transferable even among family members. The Card can only be used by the person whose name is embossed on the front of the Card.
Compare account number
  • Always compare the account number on the front and back of the presented Card with the account number printed on the receipt dispensed from your electronic POS terminal or cash register.
Registration mark
  • All American Express Cards have a registration mark next to the Blue Box logo.
Compare signatures
  • A Cardmember's signature is required for all face-to-face transactions. The signature on the receipt or the ROC should match the signature on the back of the Card.
Watch out for
  • An easy sale, random purchase, bulk buying or purchase without trial or examination of goods.
  • Nervous behavior, excessive sweating.
  • Attempts to distract or rush you during the transaction.
  • Expensive multiple purchases over a short period of time.
When suspicious
  • Ask the Cardmember to present some personal identification.
  • Call the American Express Authorisation Centre on 800 124 2230 and ask for "Code 10".
